Cervical screening (smear test) is not a test for cancer, instead it is a screening test to detect abnormalities at an early stage in the cells in the cervix. When detected early, these changes are easily treated and curable.

You will be sent a letter inviting you for cervical screening if you are registered with a GP. Please make sure your GP has your current address.

You have the right to ask for your test to be taken by a female doctor or nurse

The test cannot be done during your period.

The best time to do the test is midway through your cycle as you are less sensitive.
